Man still critical after crash

NEW CASTLE — An Ohio man remains in critical condition following an accident in Wampum.

James E. Anderson, 60, of New Middletown was injured in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Route 18 and Clyde Street Saturday. Wampum police are still investigating.

Police said the accident involved Anderson’s 2002 Hyundai Elantra and a Buick Century driven by Irene Stella Gobrich, 80, of 1416 Davidson St. Gobrich wasn’t injured, police said.

Officers were unable to interview Anderson, who is in St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. But Gobrich told them she had been traveling west on Clyde Street and stopped at the Route 18 intersection when she entered they highway.

Gobrich reported she did not see Anderson’s southbound vehicle, which she said was traveling at a high speed, and the two cars collided.

Anderson was trapped in his vehicle and unresponsive. Firefighters from Wampum and North Beaver Township were summoned to extract him.

Anderson was transported to a nearby ballfield and taken by helicopter Youngstown.

Police said an electric pole and a warning light control box were damaged in the collision. Anderson’s vehicle was severely damaged, while minor damage was reported to Gobrich’s auto.
