Firefighters, policeman commended

NEW CASTLE — Four New Castle firefighters and a policeman have been commended for saving the lives of three people this year.

Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo and city council presented the commendations to assistant fire chief Michael Petrone and firefighters Marco Bulisco, Anthony Mangieri and Marko Relic and to police officer James Heaney Thursday night.

The four firefighters were dispatched on a call for a woman having a seizure Oct. 18. The woman was in cardiac arrest when they arrived.

They started CPR, applied an automated external defibrillator and got her heart to beat again. The firefighters then transferred her to an ambulance.

After spending several days in the hospital, she was released and returned to her normal routine.

On Jan. 20, Heaney was dispatched on a call where a man came out of a home with a severe stab wound. As officers were arresting a suspect, Heaney placed his fingers into the wound to control the bleeding until emergency medical services arrived. The attending physician said Heaney’s actions were responsible for saving the man’s life.

Then, on May 24, Heaney was the first officer on the scene at a house that was engulfed in flames. A male was inside, but he refused to leave. He had to be physically pulled from the home by Heaney and other officers.

Heaney recently received the “Officer of the Quarter” award from Police Chief Bobby Salem.
