NEW CASTLE — The city of New Castle has hired a consultant to plan a pedestrian riverwalk in the downtown.

Council awarded a contract for $30,000 to Macking Engineering Co. of Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Half of the cost will be paid with funds authorized by the Lawrence County commissioners and the other half from a state Greenways Trail grant awarded to the city.

As envisioned, the riverwalk would pass through the downtown on Washington Street and along the Neshannock Creek.

Mackin Engineering, working with a local planning committee, will determine the exact route, the cost to develop it and potential development along the trail, including streetscape improvements, art such as murals and sculptures and historic markers.

The consultant also will identify possible funding sources for development of the trail and other improvements.

The timetable for completing the plan is Dec. 31.
