NEW CASTLE — Ellwood City and Wampum have been awarded state grants to aid in cultural and recreational activities.

State Rep. Jaret Gibbons announced that Ellwood City’s Main Street Project Revitalization Inc. has been given a $60,000 grant for the construction of a comfort station on Beaver Avenue.

The station will be accessible to people visiting the Ellwood City Community Plaza and Farmers Market and reduce the operating costs associated with renting portable restrooms.

The Wampum Community Revitalization Committee has received a $150,000 grant to restore a historic train station into a trailhead community facility. The property is part of a plan to connect Wampum with Ellwood City with biking, walking and river trails.

The grants were provided through the Commonwealth Finance Authority Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program.
