Officer, dog win state honors

NEW CASTLE — A Mahoning Township police officer and dog have won state honors for a 2013 drug bust.

Patrolman Brian Magliocca and canine officer Vex made a significant contribution leading to the seizure of 242 pounds of marijuana with a street value estimated at over $1 million in December.

Lawrence County District Attorney Joshua Lamancusa presented the two with an award from the Pennsylvania Narcotic Officers Association that recognizes members of law enforcement who have made a difference in drug enforcement.

Lamancusa said county officials had been contacted by Homeland Security in December, after customs officials had notified the agency a suspicious private airplane had landed at the New Castle Airport for refueling after federal officials had tracked it from Utah.

Magliocca and Vex went to the airport and Vex gave a positive indication that drugs were inside the plane. As a result, a search warrant was obtained and the marijuana was found in a search by several police agencies and the district attorney’s drug task force.

The pilot, Ken Barton Burrows, 53, of Orem, Utah, was charged with several drug offenses, then allowed to complete his flight and make a controlled delivery of the marijuana.

Lamancusa said a portion of proceeds from the sale of the Cessna plane Burrows had been flying will be distributed to the township under drug seizure laws.
