County tax deadline extended

NEW CASTLE — The deadline for paying Lawrence County property taxes at a discount has been extended to May 8.

The period when taxes are paid at face value is May 9 through July 9.

Taxes paid between July 10 and Dec. 31 will be charged a penalty fee. Any unpaid taxes at the end of 2013 will be turned over to the county tax claim bureau.

The deadlines for the discount and face periods were extended at the county treasurer’s request because of a delay in the mailing of the tax statements last month.

Interim tax statements — those sent to people whose assessed value was changed because of property improvements — will be due May 31 at a discount.

Those may be paid at face value from June 1 through 31 and the penalty phase is Aug. 1 through Dec. 31, according to J.R. Hardester, county assessor.

Hardester explained that the interim bills are sent to people who have made improvements on their properties that were not previously on record.

Whenever a property receives a building or addition or other improvement that could change its assessed value by $2,500 or more, the assessor’s staff goes out and reassesses that property to determine its higher worth, then sends an interim bill for the difference. That practice was instituted in 2010.
