Lawrence County Fair: Local women nab multiple honors

NEW CASTLE — Two Lawrence County women are among those who impressed the fair judges this year with their expertise with a needle.

Eleanore Patton of the Mahoning Valley Grange won all blue ribbons and best-of-show ribbons for her entries in the adult sewing competition in previous years, and this year was no different.

Her winnings include an Aunt Jemima sweeper cover, an Amish Lady sweeper cover, a bunny sewing machine cover, a picture with 25 Christmas ornaments mounted and framed, and 36-inch-tall Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls that all received special awards given by the Lawrence County Fair.

She also won best of show in adult clothing, sponsored by fair home economics director Lori Hites and the Lawrence County Fair.

Patton has been a frequent visitor at the fair this week and active in grange activities.

Joyce Shannon of Union Township captured seven blue ribbons plus three best of show awards in the adult needlework and ornament competitions.

She said she started needlepoint and cross-stitching when she joined the Embroiderer’s Guild of America in 1990.

Since then, she has served as its president.

This year her items won seven blue ribbons at the fair, along with one second and one third.

She noted her mother Mary Ann Walczak, “taught me the old-fashioned way on pillows.”
