NEW CASTLE —
Final preparations are in place for the 76th annual Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils state conference.
The event, hosted by Laurel and Union high schools’ students councils, will be at the Scottish Rite Cathedral and Lawrence County Fairgrounds Nov. 1-3.
Registration for the 712 students representing 121 Pennsylvania schools is being done, T-shirts are being sorted, and bags with information and other materials for the delegates are being packed. The students, along with about 200 advisers, will hear keynote speakers, participate in workshops and attend regional meetings.
Faculty advisers are Rose Ann Fulena from Union and Toni Schooley from Laurel.
Fulena noted, though, that there is a desperate need for more Lawrence County families to host two or more student delegates.
So far, only 334 beds have been confirmed, she said.
“We need to let parents know where their children are being housed by Oct. 20 so we need a very quick response,” Fulena acknowledged.
Host families need to provide a bed, air mattress or couch on Nov. 1 and 2, transportation, one dinner, two breakfasts and snacks.
The application to become a host family, specific times, and more details about the conference are available on the “Host” page of www.pasc2012.org.
An informative meeting for host families will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the Union High School library and 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Laurel High School library.
“It is a great honor for Laurel and Union to be hosting this conference for the first time ever in Lawrence County,” Fulena said. “Please help us show them how our community can work together.”
Altogether, including representatives from Union and Laurel, about 1,000 students and advisers will be participating.
The conference has been entirely planned and coordinated by the student councils from both schools who oversee all aspects including scheduling, food and entertainment.
