NEW CASTLE — Youngsters from New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ made their presence felt this Christmas.
Some 14 young people sang songs, then presented blankets this week to residents of Avalon Nursing Home at 3410 West Pittsburg Road.
The youngsters are age 2 through high school age. Marquetta Lane and Adrian Ross sang solos.
“The lesson we’re teaching our children is that it’s nice to be nice,” said youth leader Jeaunna Payne. The church is located at 1701 Moravia St.
“It’s important for our young people to learn to give back to the community and not to forget about the people in nursing homes during the holidays. They need to know that others are thinking about them.”
This is the third year the church’s youth took part in the activity. The youngsters presented blankets to residents of The Haven last year and to Edison Manor the year before.
The facility is home to 83 residents and is at capacity said administrative coordinator Yolanda Shakespeare. She added, “Our residents aren’t forgotten over the holidays. We have a lot of volunteers, carolers and people donate presidents and flowers.”
