Woman douses mattress fire

New Castle News

Slippery Rock Township firefighters were called to a mattress fire on Route 422 Sunday afternoon.

According to Chief Bill Lunn, resident Catherine Kent “kept a cool head” and doused the burning mattress with pans of water until firemen arrived.

Firemen received the call at 4:30 p.m., and remained for an hour.

“We pulled the mattress out of the house, then ran our fans for about an hour to try to pull the smoke out of the house,” Lunn said.

The Shenango and Portersville/Muddy Creek volunteer departments were called for back-up, but were not needed, Lunn said.

He said the fire was accidental and damage was minimal.
