Union police officer resigns

New Castle News

The Union Township supervisors last night accepted the resignation of police officer Mark Pelto.

In his letter of resignation, Pelto, who has been an officer since 1984, said he is leaving to become the chief of the North Beaver Police Department. His resignation is effective next week.

The supervisors said they appreciated Pelto’s many years of service and noted that at one time, he served as Union Township’s police chief.

The supervisors were notified by the New Castle Sanitation Authority that basic rates might be increased by $2 — from $11.87 to $13.87. The authority expects to vote on the proposed increase at its Dec. 11 meeting. If approved, the new rates will take effect Jan. 1.

Following the meeting, township secretary Sally Byler said the authority’s rate increase may not affect the township’s rates. The average resident, she said, pays bills of $72 per quarter, based on water consumption.

The supervisors also agreed to place a new street light at English Avenue and Harbor Road, and to update its emergency management plan.
