Woman hospitalized following crash
New Castle News
A Mahoningtown woman is in good condition Tuesday in Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, after a weekend accident.
New Castle police said Kimberly Barton, 26, of 230 S. Cedar St., was northbound on North Liberty Street at 1:30 a.m. Sunday when her Pontiac Grand Am GT left the road, striking a utility pole with its right front fender.
Police said the impact caused the car to spin in a clockwise direction that resulted in her striking a second utility pole with the left front fender.
Police were assisted by Noga Ambulance company and the New Castle Fire Department, who used two Hurst tools to cut Barton out of her car.
Fire Chief Tom Bulisco said one of the poles had snapped, striking the driver’s door. This pushed Barton into the passenger’s seat, he said.
“Neither door could be opened,” Bulisco noted.
Barton was taken to Jameson Hospital, he said, then transferred to Presbyterian because of her extensive injuries.
The crash occurred in the 800 block of North Liberty, police said. Both Penn Power and Verizon were notified. The street was closed for several hours while the poles were replaced and debris and gasoline were cleared from the street.
Police said Barton told them she had been “careless and was playing with her cell phone” when her car left the road and hit the first pole.
Police said she will be cited for careless driving.
