Teens seriously injured in crash

New Castle News

Two teenagers were seriously injured when they were ejected from a car traveling on Union Valley Road.

The driver, Michael Work, 18, of 600 Orchard St., in Shenango Township, was in critical condition in Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. His passenger, a 16-year-old female from New Castle, also is in critical condition, according to Shenango police. They said she is in Children’s Hospital, Pittsburgh, but did not release her name.

Police said both were taken to Pittsburgh by helicopter following the accident.

According to police, Work was westbound on Union Valley Road about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday when the vehicle left the road, crashed through a fence and went down an embankment.

Police Chief David Tresky said the car rolled over four or five times and both teens were ejected.

Tresky praised Shenango Township fire department personnel for saving the passenger’s life. He said she was not breathing following the crash and firefighters performed CPR until the ambulance arrived.

The Pennsylvania State Police crash investigation unit from Butler is assisting in reconstructing the accident. The cause is still unknown, the police chief said.
