Man severely burned in fire dies

New Castle News

A Lower East Side man who was severely burned when his clothing caught fire on Sept. 23 has died.

Raymond Mellott Sr., 68, of 512 Cleveland Ave. had been a patient in the burn unit of Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh since he was flown there after the accident. He had been on life support and he died yesterday morning, according to his son, Raymond Mellott II.

Witnesses said Mellott’s other son, 9-year-old Tyler Mellott, were at home together when the fire broke out in a pan with oil on the electric stove in the kitchen while Raymond Mellott Sr. was making french fries.

Mellott grabbed the burning pan and his clothing ignited and he ran outside in flames. He suffered extensive burns of the neck, face, torso and legs.

A few neighbors helped douse the fire with extinguishers and another neighbor tackled Mellott to the ground to snuff out the flames and try to remove his shirt.
