County explores workers’ health complaints

Lawrence County Adult Probation workers may not be sick of their jobs, but their jobs may be making them sick.
The county commissioners said yesterday they are taking immediate action to check the building across from the courthouse on Court Street.
“We’re looking into it,” county administrator James Gagliano said. “When our people complained of symptoms, we got on it right away.”
Court Administrator Michael Occhibone said symptoms include rashes and asthma-like respiratory problems. The complaints began several weeks ago.
Commissioner chairman Steve Craig said he and Commissioner Rick DeBlasio had visited the building immediately, but could see no obvious problems.
“But we called people in to test the air. The building will be sterilized this weekend,” he said.
Initial analysis, Craig said, revealed no toxic levels of mold, spores or other airborne irritants that might be affecting the health of employees.
About 20 people work in the office.
Craig said Eckles Architects will come over the weekend to check ducts, heating and cooling systems, and overall air condition.
“I believe we have to check the air exchange,” he said. “We need to get fresh air moving in there.”
Craig noted that three sides of the office are under ground. Windows are at the front of the office, but rarely can be opened.
“The buildings are smoke-free,” he said. “So the office’s clients stand outside, finishing their cigarettes before they come in. To open a window might make things worse.”
Craig stressed the commissioners are concerned about the well-being of their employees.
“They have difficult jobs, dealing with difficult people,” he said. “We don’t need to complicate their lives by putting them into a difficult work environment.”
