A Titusville youth escaped injury when his wheelchair ran off a trail at McConnell’s Mill State Park yesterday.

According to park personnel, the 12-year-old, whose name was not released, was riding in his motorized wheelchair at 3 p.m. along the Kildoo Trail, about 150 yards downstream of the old mill. The boy’s mother was with him.

That portion of the trail is paved, and it is on the same side of the Slippery Rock Creek as the mill.

According to officials with the Shenango Township Volunteer Fire Department, which assisted, the youth lost control of his wheelchair on the rain-slicked trail. The chair went off the trail, over an embankment and landed on some rocks, about 25 to 30 feet down the hillside. The boy landed about 10 to 15 feet from the path.

Park personnel responded, but the chair was too heavy for them to lift. Assistance was requested from the Shenango department and Noga Ambulance.

Fire department personnel said the motorized chair, which weighs about 200 pounds, was taken up the slope. The rescue workers then returned for the youth who sustained only minor scrapes and bruises.

The boy was reunited with his chair and able to use it to return to the family vehicle.
