Illness explored in documentary

New Castle News

A documentary film about fibromyalgia will be shown locally.

“Living with Fibromyalgia, A Journey of Hope and Understanding” describes the illness from the perspectives of seven patients, as well as doctors and health-care providers.

The film will be shown at 7 p.m. Sunday at New Castle Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1510 Jackson Ave.

Filmmakers are Daneen Akers and Stephen Eyer, a husband and wife who are faculty members at Pacific Union College.

The couple were introduced to the subject after Akers’ mother was diagnosed with the illness in 2001. They spent two years researching, filming and producing the movie.

The finished film features Akera as she tries to understand her mother’s illness, characterized by widespread pain and fatigue.

About 8 to 10-million Americans suffered from fibromyalgia. It is diagnosed mainly in women, but children and men can have it.

The local showing of the documentary is free and open to the public.
