A sleeping couple and three dogs are safe after their New Beaver Borough home caught fire early yesterday.
Jake and Nicole Stramba were rescued from their two-story house at 564 Possum Hollow Road after flames erupted in a nearby shed and spread.
When crews arrived on the scene about 12:45 a.m. the fire was fully engulfed, said Kevin Peters, chief of the New Beaver Borough Volunteer Fire Department. A neighbor alerted firefighters that the couple was still in the home.
The chief, who also lives on Possum Hollow Road, entered by kicking open a door. He said he met the couple coming down the stairs.
A Rottweiler and two smaller dogs were also saved.
Assisting New Beaver were the Wampum, Enon Valley and North Beaver Township volunteer fire departments.
Peters returned to the scene later yesterday and said the home sustained damage of at least $50,000, but was not completely destroyed. He also is uncertain as to the cause.
