Two men suspected of illegally taking scrap metal have been released from the Lawrence County jail.

New Castle police said Albert Pennachio, 36, of Scotland Lane, and Devin Alan Pennachio, 19, of 619 Winter Road were both charged with theft and receiving stolen property. Both were arraigned and released from jail after posting bond of $2,500. Their preliminary hearings are set for May 20.

Police were called to the 400 block of South Cascade Street at 8:15 p.m. Friday when an employee of Cioffi Construction saw a blue pickup truck loaded with scrap metal. The man told police the truck did not belong at the site.

Before officers arrived, the truck left. Police said owner Rick Cioffi followed the truck down Croton Avenue to East Washington Street.

There, police stopped the truck, driven by Albert Pennachio, and noticed the bed was fully loaded with scrap metal.

Police said Cioffi arrived and identified all but several barrels as his property. He also asked police to file charges.

Police said the truck was towed.

Officers later said that in addition to theft and receiving stolen property charges, Albert Pennachio will be charged with failure to secure a load because the scrap had not been tied down and was in danger of falling out of the truck.

In a different case, police issued a summons to Lucas McLaren, 29, of 730 Croton Ave. and Nicola Jean Miller, 21, of 3486 Churchill Road, Hillsville, both charged with theft and receiving stolen property.

Police were called to the 1000 block of East Washington Street at 10 a.m. Saturday by a man saying the two were loading reinforcement bars into the back of their vehicle.

Police arrived to see 25 pieces of rebar in the vehicle.

Miller told police a blond woman in the house gave the two permission to take the material. However, the police were told that no blond woman lived in the house.

The rebar was valued at $180.
