Ellwood football coach quits
New Castle News
The Frank Colao era appears to have come to an end at Ellwood City Lincoln High.
The football coach informed his players yesterday that he will resign, according to the Ellwood City Ledger.
Football booster club president Patty Ierino told the Ledger that Colao resigned for personal reasons. His departure will not be official until he turns in his resignation letter and it is accepted by the school board. The board’s next meeting is Thursday night.
Attempts to reach Colao for comment were unsuccessful.
Colao, a 1973 graduate of Ellwood City, took over the program in December, 2006 and guided the Wolverines to an 0-9 run last season.
Ellwood City, which was shut out in six games and outscored 429-27, went 0-8 in the WPIAL Class AA Midwestern Athletic Conference.
Last season was Colao’s first head coaching position after serving as an assistant coach for 26 years.
He began his coaching career at Ellwood City (1980-86) before heading to North Allegheny (1987-96, 2001-03), Seneca Valley (1998-2000) and Riverside (2004-05). He returned to Ellwood City in 2006 to serve as an assistant to Curt Agostinelli.
Agostinelli resigned two months before Colao was hired. He coached the Wolverines for 11 seasons and collected a 41-66 record.
Ellwood City’s last winning season was in 2000 when it went 7-3 and won a Parkway Conference championship.
