Woman jailed after car chase

New Castle News

A woman is in the Lawrence County jail after leading police Tuesday on a high-speed chase through six municipalities.

Amy Jean Tillia, 27, of Grove City was arraigned before District Judge Scott McGrath on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and recklessly endangering another person. Police said the latter charge stems from Tillia nearly causing a head-on collision with a New Wilmington police officer involved in the pursuit.

She also was charged with 26 summary traffic violations.

Tillia was lodged in Lawrence County jail in lieu of $25,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. March 25 in Central Court.

According to state police, Tillia was wanted on a probation violation. She was spotted about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday driving a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier in New Castle by two bail agents, who notified 911. Two city police officers spotted the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but Tillia allegedly attempted to flee.

The result was a 15-minute chase through New Castle; Union, Pulaski, Mahoning and Wilmington Townships in Lawrence County; and Wilmington Township in Mercer County. State police joined the pursuit on Route 224 at Route 60.

Police said Tillia ended the chase when she pulled over on Route 18, approximately two miles north of the Lawrence County line.

Tillia made news last June when she was one of two people who allegedly tried to break into a car in the New Castle News parking lot. In that incident, employees and bystanders attempted to hold the two suspects until police arrived. In the process, Tillia allegedly bit a News employee and told him that she had AIDS.
