Overheated cooking oil caused a fire that destroyed a shed and a food trailer on the city's South Side. New Castle Fire Chief Tom Bulisco said a member of the New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ was cooking fish outside in a pot similar to a turkey fryer around 3 p.m. Friday behind the church at 26 E. Long Ave., when the oil caught fire. It ignited the church's food vending trailer and spread to a barn-style storage building that was used to house cooking supplies and equipment, he said. The fire also damaged the back part of a vacant commercial building next door at 28 E. Long Ave. Bulisco estimated the total loss at $15,000. No injuries were reported.
