NEW CASTLE —
Swimming pool owners are advised to follow Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection regulations when closing their pools for the season.
The Neshannock Township supervisors, meeting Monday, noted anyone emptying a pool must drain it into the sanitary sewer, not the backyard or street.
Chairman Ralph Sheen Jr. said the DEP asked that private and public pool owners and pool management companies be responsible when disposing of chlorinated wastewater.
The state is asking pool owners to neutralize wastewater that contains harmful chemicals, which are responsible for fish kills that could be prevented. This has happened when pool water is discharged into sanitary sewers.
In addition, permits are needed prior to discharging swimming pool water.
