NEW CASTLE —
Three contemporary Christian bands will perform a benefit concert at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at Westminster College.
Building 429, Leeland and Royal Tailor will take the stage in Orr Auditorium. The bands are joining together for the Sounds of Hope Tour sponsored by Food for the Hungry.
The performance also is a benefit for the New Wilmington Mission Conference’s Anderson Auditorium roof fund. The amphitheater, located on the shore of Westminster’s Lake Brittain, is the conference’s summer home on the campus and is need of a new roof.
The amphitheater, which features a curved roof, was built in 1958. The New Wilmington Missionary Conference had been meeting in big old circus tents on Westminster’s campus prior to that. Now, it would have a permanent place of meeting and worship without the worries of fighting the summer rains that always seemed to accompany conference week.
The college provided the ground. Conference volunteers provided the labor. And various churches, groups, conference delegates and missionaries provided the funds to erect their new home. Their names can be seen on bronze plaques attached to the arches that support the curved roof.
The amphitheatre has been home to other events as well. The Wilmington High School band has used it for end-of-the-school-year concerts. It’s also become the gathering point for an annual Fourth of July Weekend performance by The River City Brass Band while fireworks light up the night sky.
But for the many who attended the Mission Conference over the 53 years of Anderson Auditorium, there are great memories. Powerful, gripping, inspiring, guest speakers from all corners of the globe brought their messages of missions abroad and words of enlightenment and encouragement to those wanting to learn about the field of missions work.
Tickets for the fund-raising concernt may be purchased by calling the College Celebrity Series box office at (724) 946-7354.
