NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
The decision by the New Castle school board to conduct a national search for a superintendent through the services of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association is money well spent.
Selecting a superintendent is one of the most important decisions a school board can make. Using the school boards association to assist in the process is common practice and does not exclude local individuals, but it does assure parents and taxpayers that the school district is hiring the most qualified candidates available.
While the local intermediate unit can perform a superintendent search for free, it does not come without ties to a New Castle school board member. For too many years, the school board has been plagued by politics and favoritism in its hiring practices.
It’s no wonder why those on the board who represent the status quo want to go through the usual channels.
However, the five board members who voted in favor of using the services of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association in the search for a new superintendent are insuring that decision will not be based on local politics.
