NEW CASTLE —
Sports Editor, The News:
I am a big Notre Dame fan. I also like the New York Yankees and I like to see the Pirates do good.
Sports Illustrated had a poll once to name the most loved and the most hated teams in America. Notre Dame and the New York Yankees were first in both categories.
George Steinbrenner was not liked because of his style, but he was not a cheapskate. He just wanted a winning team. He paid luxury taxes to teams like the Pirates. They don’t buy players, they spend the money on the management.
If Notre Dame and the New York Yankees have 50 percent of the country, that means that teams like Pitt, Penn State and Ohio State have only about 10 percent of the country that root for these teams as their No. 1 team.
