In regard to the closing of Youth Development Center:
I worked there for 5 1/2 years in the 1980s. Half of the closing is understanding the problem. One of the opponents to the closing is Jaret Gibbons. He represents the people but doesn’t understand the problem.
He claims that more than 200 employees will lose their jobs. Very true, but that’s not the problem.
Here is an example. One inmate, different, not a problem, but different. He was a body builder, doing algebra while other inmates had difficulty doing simple math. He took SAT tests and scored very high.
He was accepted to Slippery Rock University and was to be transported there and back to the center. Monday he was to start his college career. On the Friday before, he was suddenly released and given a ride back to his home town of Pittsburgh.
A small article in the Pittsburgh Press indicated a homeless woman was murdered. Information leaked through the “grapevine,” and the previous inmate was convicted of her murder. He enticed her into a vacated school with a cheap bottle of wine in the stairwell. And in this order, he slit her throat and then raped her.
I believe he got seven years. Ask to see YDC’s blue books. Employees had to sign in for them. You probably will be rejected.
