NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
According to the 2011 FBI Uniform Crime Report Statistics for Violent Crime, 728 Americans were murdered after being struck by hands, fists, feet or other personal bodily weapons.
Almost 1,700 were murdered by knives and other cutting instruments. In the same year, the FBI reported that 323 Americans were killed by all types of rifles, including assault rifles.
As we all can agree that every murder is a tragedy, let us not forget that the freedoms enjoyed by more than 315 million Americans, and safeguarded by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, must not be tampered with in a hurried attempt to find security by enacting more laws that only the law-abiding will follow.
Criminals will engage in crime. Murderers will find the tools for their actions. Additional regulations, new laws and other measures will do little to dissuade those intent on doing harm to others.
Our freedoms were won at great cost in a revolution and safeguarded by countless Americans for more than 230 years. No single madman and his deranged actions should cause us to forsake our rights and our traditional freedoms.
(Editor’s note: The total number of people killed by firearms in the United States in 2011, according to FBI statistics, was 8,583. Of these, 6,220 were killed by handguns.)
