NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
Just for kicks, I took Sally Herold’s advice (letter Oct. 29) and looked up the definitions for “family,” “marriage” and “love” in Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary.
Family: A group of individuals living under one roof and usually under one head: Household. (No mention of gender or even parents.)
Love: 1. Strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties (maternal love for a child). 2. Attraction based on sexual desire; affection and tenderness felt by lovers. 3. Affection based on admiration, benevolence or common interests. (Again, no mention of gender.)
Marriage: 1. The relationship that exists between a husband and a wife. 2. A similar relationship between people of the same sex. 3. A ceremony in which two people are married to each other.
How about a few other words?
Equality: Having the same rights, social status, etc.
Transgender: A person who identifies with or expresses a gender identity that differs from the one which corresponds to the person’s sex at birth.
Superstition: A belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown or a false conception of causation. For example, quoting Herold, “If we don’t stand up for the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, we will suffer the consequences like we’ve never seen before ... Our children will not be safe anywhere.”
Perhaps Herold just needs an updated dictionary.
