NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
There has been speculation as to why Joyce Nicksick would have left her post as Wilmington Area Schools superintendent so suddenly.
The possible reasons she has left could be due to a combination of stress, too long of a commute, the failure to complete projects, a thorny personality that made it hard for her to empathize with people, and guilt.
Part of the guilt may stem from her recent settlement with my wife and me over a residency issue. Over a five-year period, she, Charlie Mansell and school board authorized the spending of more than $100,000 of the taxpayers’ money to pursue us (we settled out of court for much less). So, while they slashed teachers’ positions (closing East Lawrence elementary) they simultaneously OK’d the net loss of approximately $80,000. They did all of this while my wife endured a life-and-death struggle with cancer.
School board member Nancy Bretz said in the article that she knew why Joyce is leaving and she ought to; she is cut from the same cloth. Let’s just say that it would be ironic for these two to implement “no bullying” policies in a school district.
As school board president, Bretz would condescendingly refer to concerned parents and taxpayers as “patrons” and flippantly answer legitimate questions with sarcastic replies. One can only surmise that she didn’t know the correct answers and was uncomfortable being put on the spot.
We must carefully select our representatives and implement a vetting process to make sure they have the credentials (not just a degree) and the best interest of the community at heart.
Living in the community they serve would make them more accountable. It’s also a shorter commute and it wouldn’t be so easy to escape to an out-of-town address.
