Romney speaks truth about non-taxpayers

NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

Recent attacks by liberals on the comments made by Mitt Romney regarding the percentage of Americans who do not pay income tax, while not surprising, is nonetheless unmitigated.

The pure truth is, Romney is absolutely correct. Forty-seven percent of all adult taxpayers do not pay any tax whatsoever. In fact, many of them receive tax refunds in excess of any withholdings that may have occurred.

It is also a probability that that population would support a president who would propose a redistribution of wealth. Note that there is a difference in creating the opportunity to earn that wealth as opposed to the increased taxing of some incomes and the apportioning of those revenues to others.

Many would rather be given handouts in a socialistic state rather than be afforded the opportunity to work toward a better life. They ascribe to the government carrying them from cradle to grave.

Regardless of what many call a blunder in choice of words, the truth is the truth and I applaud Romney for standing up for his convictions and for emoting the truth.

In these times and in the present political arena, it is more expedient to play to the crowd and less popular to speak one’s true opinion.
