Local Republican Party praised for its picnic

NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

I want to acknowledge Lawrence County Republican Party chairman Gale Measel and his staff for hosting the very successful picnic at Pearson Park on Aug. 3.

It was the first picnic the Lawrence County Republican Party sponsored in many years and certainly the most successful with about 150 people in attendance.

The party is renewed and energetic. Divergent opinions are offered and treated with respect for the first time in many years. Gale and his committee are certainly a welcome addition to Lawrence County politics.

I hope they keep up their excellent work.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed “unprecedented” legislation yesterday to expand gun rights in his state. Good idea?

Yes. Expanding the scope of where people can carry guns can help halt violent crimes and make those places safer.
No. Carrying guns into bars and schools is NEVER a good idea. I think it will lead to more violence.
Not sure, but I don’t plan to visit Georgia any time soon.
