Council fails to embrace value of city’s history

NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

Concerning the upcoming election for New Castle city council seats:

Some city council members who are campaigning for re-election sent postcards to residents stating they “... continually insist we follow the laws and ordinances of the city.”

However, they have chosen not to comply with certain ordinances and laws.

On Nov. 14, 2012, city council approved an ordinance to purchase and demolish the former Cooper Butler building (which housed the Lovelight Boutique and Yoga Studio). The building is not condemned and is restorable.

The property is governed by the zoning ordinance which states: Buildings of Historic Significance. Structure will be preserved, repaired, renovated or expanded in accordance with the secretary of the interior’s standards for rehabilitation.

Council is also petitioning to weaken the North Hill Historic District ordinance and the downtown overlay so there is no protection for the historic architecture.

Instead of preserving and promoting the historic area, council's actions are opposing efforts to better the historic neighborhood.

As a newcomer to New Castle, I appreciate the historical significance of the North Hill and downtown. Our historical past is one of our most precious resources. Our efforts to improve the area should not be done at the expense of the historical aspects of New Castle.

When voting for council members, we should consider candidates who can move the city forward without destroying our past.
