Editor, The News:
Considering what Mitchel Olszak and Ruth Ray wrote in recent items in The News, I am led to believe that they have believed that from day one that they were sure the Lawrence County Government Study Commission would surely recommend a change of government for Lawrence County.
Why? I think that they could not envision any other intelligent happening. It simply had to be.
But then John Russo resigned from the commission and the house of cards collapsed. Others on the commission tried to straighten that out by giving Russo new life on the commission, but that failed and they tried to blame the county commissioners for the event.
The commission meetings were open to the public and The News was invited to give its opinion on various matters to the members. It never did.
Only one member of the League of Women Voters, Elizabeth Verterano, appeared on several occasions and addressed comments to the commission, repeating ideas that have been given to an earlier study commission five years ago and which had been rejected by the vote of the county electorate.
One day, I went to the home of Ruth Ray, intending to show her a 43-page book which I had typed up, containing the result of my study of the county government. No one answered the door, so I went home and called her home phone.
I received an answer directing me to leave my name and phone number and a message, which I did.
I asked Ray to give a time and place where I could meet with her for the purpose of handing her said book and explain the content to her.
I never got a return call.

There is much to appreciate in what community offers
The other day we were running around, and I thought how great the road system in this county is. You can go anywhere and everywhere all for free. We passed stores that were packed with all the things you need, and at reasonable prices. There are restaurants and theaters all around, and no end of free things you can do.

Editor, The News: “All I can say about that is that we’re going to make a lot of farmers around here rich,” was the response given by a shale industry spokesman at a recent event at Wilmington Area High School when he was asked about what effect shale gas well drilling will have on our local agriculture.

City should not eliminate historic district protection
Editor, The News: I have been following the proposed changes by city council for the historical district. As someone who has served on city council for more than 17 years, I believe these changes would be a big mistake.
