NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
I have resided in Lawrence County all my life. My mother was employed by the county nursing home.
She lost her job when it closed. Now the county jail is threatened to basically be sold to a private company.
Now granted, the jail isn’t closing but it sure would change. Change for the worse, not the better. How can the county’s elected ones allow another county-run place to be taken away from us voters and taxpayers?
How? Well, why would any private company want to run a jail other than to make some type of profit and at whose expense? So who logically would expect any jail to be profitable?
It is a place designed to house criminals, both those who are guilty and those who are awaiting trial. The inmates housed at the county jail have criminal charges that range from summaries to rape and murder.
Who in their right mind would want some private company overseeing something that forever was overseen by the county?
Like the old saying: If it isn’t broke don’t fix it. I think this city has lost enough local business and I hope the jail employees remain county employees and not some numbers lost in some made-for-profit game.
I am a taxpayer and voter, and I am against this privatization in all aspects.
