Editor, The News:
Before the Super Bowl, I wrote a letter to encourage and challenge people throughout New Castle to give generously and make the Super Bowl Sunday their Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday.
The church that I serve, Savannah United Methodist Church, collected cans for three Sundays.
Our Souper Bowl of Caring was fun and we were able to collect 123 cans and $15 to be given to the City Rescue Mission to encourage them in their outreach to those who are in need in our community.
Our youth group put a bit of a twist on Souper Bowl Sunday by not only decorating boxes for San Francisco and Baltimore to see who would win the canned Souper Bowl, but also a box of Hopes and Dreams.
Yes, this is a box that was decorated for Superbowl 48 all decked out in Black & Gold for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
When all the cans were counted, neither San Francisco nor Baltimore won. Pittsburgh did.
I appreciate all who contributed. It was a great time for a great cause and I’d like to continue to encourage people to pay attention to the needs in our community and see what they can do to make a difference.
