LETTER: Moving over is now law

Editor, The News:

As an employee of a towing company, I would like to point out a law that was passed in September of last year.

It’s called the “move over” or “steer clear” law. This law states that whenever you see a disabled vehicle on the side of the road with emergency response vehicles, you must simply “move over.”

Common sense, right? You see a police officer pull someone over, you pull into the other lane.

What people fail to realize is that this law applies to all emergency response vehicles. That includes tow trucks.

If people see a tow truck on the side of the road helping someone by fixing a tire or loading up a vehicle to take to a repair shop, they should move over.

Last year, approximately 140 tow truck drivers were killed on the road by drivers not paying attention, talking or texting on a cell phone, etc.

So for the safety of all emergency road service personnel, everyone should obey the law and move over.
