NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
The News recently published a very nice article in advance of the Mohawk High School production of “The Phantom of the Opera.”
There was also a second article which highlighted that this musical would be the last for retiring director James McKim. McKim has been the creative force behind Mohawk’s musicals for 36 years and we wish him all the best in his retirement.
As you can imagine, my wife and I were very excited when we learned that our daughter, now a Mohawk seventh-grader, was going to be a member of the cast for “The Phantom.” We watched all four performances of the musical and words cannot express how impressed we were with the quality of this production.
I think Andrew Lloyd Webber himself would have been proud of what these young men and women accomplished. The individual performances were spectacular, while the group dance and ensemble sequences also were fantastic.
The students worked for more than a year in preparation for this musical and some took private vocal lessons to prepare themselves for the challenging roles of the phantom and Christine among others. In the weeks leading up to the performances, the rehearsals were intense and often lasted four to five hours into late evening. In addition to the cast, the student backstage crew did a tremendous job as well.
Connecting everything together were the amazing sets, wonderful costumes and a live orchestra. My wife said it best when she said the performances were such that you found yourself forgetting that you were watching high school students.
It took a team effort to pull off this production and I want to congratulate Mr. McKim, Mr. Addicott, the students, parents and administration for a job well done.
