NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
Shame on you for printing Joseph Waltenbaugh’s April 11 letter on gay marriage.
I am not a homosexual, but as a supporter of their cause and as a decent human being, I was appalled that The News would print such a letter.
I will not bother to respond to the arguments made by Waltenbaugh, as they do not warrant any kind of intelligent response. However, I will say this: The News should not be in the business of printing hatred.
As a law student, I support an intelligent discourse on the societal and legal impact of gay marriage. I believe it is important to our society and necessary to moving forward to have such public discourse. News publications serve an important role as facilitators of such discourse.
Waltenbaugh’s letter cannot be called anything close to intelligent discourse. Instead it was a hate-filled rant that compared a private activity between two consenting adults to perversion, pedophilia and bestiality.
The News should be above printing such trite garbage. In doing so, The News has undermined its role as facilitator of public discourse.
As the only newspaper in our city, The News has a responsibility to our community to resist the urge to serve as a bigot’s soapbox.
