Consider the meaning of being an American

As Independence Day approaches, let’s take time to reflect on what America means and what it means to be American.

Do the ideas from our founding documents — the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights — still resonate? How about the words from our patriotic songs or the exhortation found on the Statue of Liberty?

Consider this passage from a book copyrighted in 2012 by a highly educated man (American).

“Why do we enjoy all of these and many other blessings? It is largely because we have a representative government that respects the rights of its citizens and protects the life and property of its citizens, and because we have a military strong enough to defend us against intruders. It is because we have a free market economy, that, when unfettered, acts as an economic engine more powerful than any the world has ever seen.”

Around 20 years earlier another highly educated man (American) wrote the following:

“Why should the citizen tie his or her fate to the nation-state, which is perfectly willing to sacrifice the lives and liberties of its own citizens for the power, the profit and the glory of politicians or corporate executives or generals?

Both authors write in reference to the United States of America. Think about it.
