Car washing complaint is demeaning to deputies

NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

Wow. I can’t imagine the damage that was done to the morale of the Lawrence County sheriff’s department by the front-page article in The News recently, “Official calls out sheriff on car washes.”

I disagree with Commissioner Steve Craig’s assertion that “taxpayers get upset when they see these kinds of expenditures.”

Sheriff Perry Quahliero and his deputies are always polished and shined. They project an image that reflects New Castle pride.

I think their vehicles should do likewise. Car washes are a normal part of vehicle maintenance and should be covered as an acceptable expense, summer and winter.

Law enforcement officers have a thankless and difficult job. They get enough grief from the bad guys. They shouldn’t have to be demeaned by those who are supposed to be on their side.

Summer is a perfect time for a good read. Where's your favorite place to spend off time with your nose in a book?

Relaxing on the couch
On a bench in the park
By the pool
At the closest beach
I don't have time to read
