NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
We subscribe to Smithsonian magazine and in this month’s issue, it has a listing of the 20 best small towns in the United States.
Surprise! Number seven is Butler, and the magazine gives Butler credit for having the Bantam car company there, which invented the Army Jeep.
When I was in high school in 1941, my mother and I drove to Wampum to check out a classified ad and a fellow had a Bantam convertible car for sale with 14 tires for $50.
It was a great deal; the only problem was we didn’t have $50.
I never see a $50 bill that I don’t think of that Bantam and how great I would have looked in it in 1941.
Congratulations to Butler.
