Bible presents rules that may be offensive

NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

Sally Herold (May 6 letter) claims marriage equality goes against God’s law.

Herold fails to tell us that her “definition” of marriage goes against other biblical “definitions” of marriage.

Some non-deity said if a man is caught raping a young woman, he must pay 50 pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her (Deuteronomy 22:28-29).

There were 88,000 reported rapes in 2009. That opens a whole new world of matrimonial bliss.

Another non-deity said after battle, kill all the boys and kill all the women who have slept with a man. Only the young girls who are virgins may live; you may keep them for yourselves (Numbers 31:17-18). Imagine embracing all the Iraqi and Afghanistan war brides.

One more non-deity said that Judah said to Er’s brother Onan: You must marry Tamar, as our law requires of the brother of a man who has died. Her first son from you will be your brother’s heir (Genesis 38:8). Sounds creepy doesn’t it?

Before people speak to me about their religion, they should first show me how they treat other people. Before they tell me how much they love their God, they should show me how much they love all His children.

Wouldn’t it be something if LGBT people are part of God’s plan to test if we really do love one another?

Yes, heaven help us. More important, heaven help Herold.

Another letter writer (Charles Wilcox, May 7) fails to realize that elected officials place their hands on the Bible to uphold the Constitution; they do not place their hands on the Constitution to uphold the Bible.

Do you talk to yourself when you're alone?

Yes, but I’m basically just thinking out loud.
No, that would be weird.
I don’t know. Next time I’m alone, I’ll ask.
