Editor, The News:
Thomas Jefferson said I love humanity, it’s the people I dislike.
Hypocrisy is a major reason for this statement.
Not too long ago, we fought gambling as a sin. But when churches found they could make money at it from bingo and bazaars, they made gambling OK.
The News has published countless articles on a race track and casino that supposedly is the financial salvation to our area. We want it at others’ expense. Just get rid of the commission and let anyone put tracks anywhere to take your money at odds you cannot win. The state wants you to play the lottery, yet your odds are so low you also can’t win.
Many gladly accept Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid and say, “I earned that.” Whoa. They didn’t. Employers put in at least half of what they get and if they outlive the amortization schedule, they should be getting a pink slip that says their account is dry. They don’t. They are living off current contributions from us.
People say we are taxed too much. Whoa again. We are one of the lowest taxed civilized nations in the world, with many European and Far Eastern countries paying upward of 50 to 65 percent of income.
Nationalized health systems are claimed socialistic. Yet virtually all civilized countries of the world have universal health care that’s excellent and at a fraction of what we pay. What people mean is “give me mine, pay for everything and I really don’t care about my neighbor.”
Neighborhood watch signs go up while the same people play video games or watch TV programs that involve violence, murder and gore.
Jefferson also said, “The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers.”
Changed thinking cures hypocrisy.
