NEW CASTLE —
Editor, The News:
Those who say marriage is between one man and one woman subscribe to an un-American belief in which their deity is the supreme civil ruler.
Iran would be an example of a theocracy. The United States is a government not bound by any religion. America was founded on freedom and equality for all.
They fail to realize that in 1792, marriage was defined as between one white man and one white woman. Marriage was “redefined” when blacks and whites could wed one another.
Do they know that slaves had to seek the permission of their owners for marriage? In addition, slave owners had the authority to dissolve these marriages. Those definitions were not changed by religious mandate because religion had no authority in the matter.
Have they forgotten that until the 1950s, divorce was only possible as a result of criminal action or adultery? Again, theocrats conveniently dismiss processes in order to form a more perfect union in which something changes into a better form.
Twenty percent of the states have upheld equal treatment under the law as promised in the 14th Amendment. Pennsylvania should follow suit considering the public endorsement from Dick Cheney, Laura Bush and Colin Powell in regard to marriage equality. A valid response from the theocrats would explain how marriage equality diminishes their quality of life.
Blinded by dogma, they conveniently dismiss the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution.
Marriage equality is not forcing any religion to perform any ceremony. Marriage equality is however, seeking the same birth right and privileges afforded the rest of society.
You go to the courthouse for a marriage license. You go to a lawyer to get divorced. You go to a clergy person for a ceremony.
