Bearing arms today ignores mass killings

NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

I’m a Republican, so of course I’m opposed to gun control, right? Wrong.

The NRA lobby pours millions of dollars into the coffers of Republican candidates to buy their opposition to gun control legislation.

I wonder how many of these legislators would vote their consciences and support curbs on assault weapons and rapid-fire guns were it not for their commitment to the NRA agenda.

The first 10 amendments to the Constitution, labeled the Bill of Rights, were drafted in 1791.

“The right of the people to keep and bear arms” made sense in that era before adequate police protection could be provided for local communities. No longer.

Mass killings in recent years mandate strenuous government efforts to prevent the occurrence of future slaughter by deranged individuals.
