NEW CASTLE — Editor, the News:

I am writing to acknowledge the 136 citizens who turned out recently for the community-wide meeting organized by New Visions for Lawrence County.

The New Visions members appreciated the interest and enthusiasm the community members showed in the organization’s purpose and their willingness to get involved.

The excitement in the room that night was palpable. I really sensed that the people present at the meeting are ready for a big change and are willing to help make it happen.

As Mitchel Olszak pointed out in his column concerning the meeting, “The task at hand is challenging and full of pitfalls.” He also pointed out that others have tried similar efforts and have failed.

As we begin our effort, we do so fully aware of both of his observations. As he reported, our intention is to develop a plan for community transformation and take consistent actions in line with the plan.

I feel very strongly that great results can be achieved if we work together for the common good. I think many of those present at the meeting felt the same way.

Anyone who missed our meeting and is interested in becoming part of the solution can call either Angie Mohr or me at (724) 654-5507. Citizens can also follow our progress online at It is all about working together, and we need the public’s help.

I saw Michelangelo quoted recently where he said, “The greater danger for most of us is not setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark.” New Visions is aiming high.
