County tax increase hurts middle class

NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

So far in Lawrence County in 2014, the property taxes have gone up 7 percent.

Gas bills have gone up, electric bills and water bills are due to rise also.

Instead of raising the property tax on people who have homes in the county to pay back debt that is owed, why not cut some of the food stamp/county assistance handouts instead of continuing to take more money from the homeowners/middle working class of Lawrence County?

Instead of developing more assistance programs for utilities, etc., why not put that money toward the back debt so that the people who are ineligible for any assistance can afford to continue to put food on their tables and keep a roof over their families’ heads at night?
