County needs ideas for boosting turnout

NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

According to unofficial figures from the website for Lawrence County, very few citizens turned out to vote in the primary election on May 20.

A little more than 17 percent of the 53,523 registered voters cast ballots, an altogether execrably low number.

Instead of lamenting the problem, however, let’s look for a solution. What can be done to increase the voter turnout in November? Here are some suggestions:

1. Become familiar with who the candidates are.

2. Become informed regarding the issues.

3. Become aware that each vote counts.

4. Take seriously the civic responsibility to vote and then cast informed ballots.

Yes! I'd love to know what my pet is thinking.
Nah, it's probably not that interesting.
I don't know. I'm afraid of what I might find out.
