Scrap yard business is bad fit for city

NEW CASTLE — Editor, The News:

On July 23, New Castle City Council will hold a public meeting to discuss a variance requested by Upstate Shredding/Weitsman to locate a scrap yard shredding business in a prime location in our city.

Council will be making a decision that will impact on our community for generations.

On March 5, the Buffalo, N.Y., City Council rejected a similar request by the same company. Council cited the following reasons for the rejection: Noise and vibration creates a nuisance, causes traffic congestion, trucks are hard on streets, roads and bridges.

New Castle is facing the same problems as Buffalo, only our list of objections is longer. The site in New Castle is located in a flood plain, within a short walk from our downtown, historical buildings, town mall, fire department and the state office buildings.

A short video of the state-of-the-art shredder and stripper are shown operating in Owego, N.Y. It is a very impressive operation; I do not believe that this project is a good fit for New Castle in the Jefferson Street location — especially when we are in great anticipation from Refresh Dental, Marcellus Shale and casino/race track projects.

If people want to stand up for New Castle and have a vision for the city, they need to view this video:
